myspace zaps: MySpace launches instant messaging service

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA -- MySpace Wednesday officially launched an instant messaging service customized for users of the teen-oriented social networking Web site.

MySpace released the beta test version of the service without fanfare in a "soft launch" last year and says that it spread "virally" to more than 17 million users.

"This is a product with personality," said MySpace co-founder Tom Anderson. "MySpaceIM was born out of user feedback and we've spent the last year listening to our community and tweaking it to match their needs."

Now a "fully integrated beta service," MySpaceIM can be downloaded online at http://myspace.com/myspaceim, according to the US Internet company.

MySpaceIM is designed to let members of the Web site easily share videos, pictures, and other content from profile pages along with snippets of sound called "zaps" and music.

It is customized for countries including Australia, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain, Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, and China.

Movable Type 4.0 Beta: Popular Blogging Tool To Go Open Source

Blogging software giant Six Apart has announced the beta release of Movable Type (MT) 4.0. MT 4.0 is the first release since 2004’s MT 3.0 and brings upwards of 50 new features and a completely revamped interface.

SixApart Vice President, Anil Dash, writing on the Six Apart blog, also says that the new version will be released under the GPL, which means MT 4.0 will be open source like its main competitor, Wordpress.

So far I haven’t been able to locate an exact feature list, but Dash’s post provides the following overview of the new version:

* A completely reinvented user interface with a dashboard overview of how all of your blogs are doing
* Support for publishing standalone pages and managing file assets and images right within MT
* Brand-new community features like OpenID, and a built-in user registration system
* A completely redesigned component architecture that makes MT faster and more scalable than ever before
* And it’s going to be available in a completely open source version with its home at a completely relaunched community site that revives an old, beloved URL: movabletype.org.

Moveable Type took something of a beating in the blogosphere when version 3.0 was released and introduced all sorts of licensing and fees that led many longtime users to abandon the platform in favor of Wordpress, Textpattern and other blogging software.

Obviously Six Apart is hoping to regain some of those users with the release of 4.0 and from all appearances the current beta is still very much a work in progress — Dash says that Six Apart would love to hear from users.

If you’re a Movable Type user and and you’d like to test the new version, grab a copy from the Movable Type site and be sure to use the feedback form if you have suggestions or feature ideas.

While it’s good to see Six Apart moving in a new direction and embracing open source, from the limited information that’s available regarding the new release, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot that Wordpress doesn’t already offer. While OpenID support is nice and the redesigned interface looks to offer some slick new stats and other options, there doesn't seem to a particular “killer feature” designed to win over former users.

While the update will no doubt be welcomed by current users, there isn’t much to entice new users to switch from their existing platforms.

The beta version of Movable Type 4.0 is free and the final release will be free for personal use with support and commercial licenses ranging from $50 for basic support to a whooping $750 for a 20 seat commercial license.

Free Text Messaging Gadget for Google Desktop unveiled by CallWave in beta

Mobile application provider CallWave has just released the beta version of its Free Text messaging gadget for Google Desktop. This tool allows mobile users to send text messages directly from their desktop itself.

The new text messaging gadget from CallWave will run in the “Communication” section of Google Desktop, and will allow users to view a list of contacts as well as select the person they would like to send a text message to.

CallWave Free Trial - Click Here!

A CallWave company official said that with consumers having difficulty text messaging using a mobile phone, its text messaging gadget will make it easier for users to contact members straight from their own PC.

CallWave’s new Free Text Messaging gadget also supports CallWave’s existing services such as CallWave Vtxt, a voice-to-text transcription service that integrates voice and text into an archive that can be accessed from a personal Web page.

“One of the largest barriers to text message usage is that it is difficult to text on a cell phone’s small interface,” said Kelly Delany, vice president of corporate marketing at CallWave, based in Santa Barbara, Calif.

“CallWave developed its text messaging gadget to simplify everyday communication activities - using the desktop to manage tasks that are difficult to do on a mobile phone”, she added.

Replies to messages can be sent to the users’ handset or email, depending on what their personal settings are. In the future, users will also be access to their stored messages stored in a searchable archive, which can be accessed from the users’ personal Web page.

The new gadget for Google Desktop from CallWave is available in beta. Users will be able to send unlimited messages during the beta phase from the United States and Canada.
