AOL Releases New Beta Version of myAOL
AOL has released a new beta version of myAOL, offering users a suite of three customizable products: a personalized homepage, a content discovery service and feed reading tools built on a portable personalization platform.
The new myAOL offers a completely personalized experience using tools that identify, find, share and archive content of personal interest. With myAOL, users can discover, use and manage feeds, bookmarks and applications from across the Web, and customize their homepage using simple drag and drop functionality.
"Our goal is to make personalization as effortless as possible while making it as relevant as possible to the user," said David Liu, Senior Vice President, AOL. "myAOL allows users of all types to find, discover, archive, and share content and applications from destinations across the Web, all from one convenient product suite."
The new myAOL suite includes:
- myPage: A personalized homepage offering access to content and applications from AOL, as well as third-party email providers and Web sites. myPage offers a comprehensive widget gallery that provides access to popular content and features from across the Web, such as Google Gadgets.
- Mgnet (pronounced Magnet) (beta.my.aol.com/page/mgnet): A distinctive, visual content discovery and recommendations service designed to scout the Web for content based on personal preferences. Using "image clouds" that represent people, places, topics and events, users simply click on pictures of personal interest in order to receive personalized content. Leveraging the assets of partners such as Truveo, a video search engine, Mgnet delivers a variety of news, blogs and videos related to each image. Users will be able to rate and save content, and later this year, be able to view and add recommendations from their AIM buddies.
- Favorites (beta.my.aol.com/page/favs): An updated feed reader that combines user feeds and bookmarks in one place, making it easy to find, manage and import feeds. Simple-to-use folders and shortcut keys allow users to quickly skim through and organize content.
In addition, a "Mix & Share" feature makes it simple to create and share feeds via email, instant message or AIM. Integrated bookmarks offer a place to store favorite content that can be accessed from any Web-enabled computer.
AOL said new features and functionality will continue to be added to myAOL. Thousands of content sources, third party applications, snaggable widgets and social networking and sharing capabilities, as well as mobile and international access will be integrated throughout the beta period.

AOL Local Search In Beta 2
AOL Local Search Beta 2 helps users find a local business or location by following three steps.
Type in a query term for the location you are looking for in the search field. Pick a location by entering a city, state or zip code. You can also enter a specific street address, which will search for locations nearest to that address.
AOL Local will locate and map a list of matches for the search term that was entered. AOL has incorporated CityGuide, MapQuest and AOL Search into one interface. The features are comparable to Yahoo Local and Google Maps.
When you find the location you are looking for on the map you can click on it and receive information along with driving directions. You can also use your mouse to click and drag the map moving it to other locations.
AOL says they have fixed the following issues:
Navigation away from the Beta tab-TheAOL Local Search beta is now yet fully integrated with the general AOL Search page. In earlier versions, if you clicked onto another of the AOL Search tabs (e.g., clicked onto the Web tab, the Local BETA tab would no longer appear. This is no longer the case.
*IMPROVED* Relevancy of results to a search term- We have resolved some of the issues resulting in some terms generating odd results. For example searching for "Target" may result in Target store locations in your area being found; it also might result in the FBI Building being found because the FBI building has a "target" range in its basement. While this has improved, please continue to file bug reports on searches you perform that do not generate the results you expect.
Address search problems-Several of the cases that generated strange search results (e.g., city names with spaces or hyphens, use or non-use of commas in addresses, etc.) have been addressed. While this has improved, please continue to file bug reports on searches you perform that do not generate the results you expect.
Printing-Search results and maps should now print correctly using printer friendly pages.
