For Halo 3 fans, the wait is almost over. After that, the real wait begins.
Microsoft announced this week that the much-publicized Halo 3 multiplayer beta will get under way on May 16, giving gamers a taste of what the sci-fi shooter's online mayhem will hold when the full version is released this fall.
Gamers who bought a copy of the Xbox 360 game Crackdown with a "Halo 3 multiplayer beta" sticker on the box, or those who lucked into an invitation via the Rule Of Three promotion, will be able to access the Halo 3 beta one month from tomorrow. An Xbox Live Gold subscription will be required to download and play the game.
Microsoft said the beta will include three new multiplayer maps and a sampling of new weapons and vehicles, including the Spartan Laser (imagine the tactical advantage it would have given Leonidas and his men in 300) and the Mongoose all-terrain vehicle.
Developers at Bungie, the game studio behind the Halo series, plan to monitor how the game performs online over the course of the beta period, which ends June 7 at 3 a.m. EDT. The data collected will be used to make improvements to the final product, which has only been given a fall 2007 release window so far.
New details about the game emerged this week with the release of Bungie's latest "making of" video documentary, showing snippets of the game's multiplayer action. Brand new armaments like trip mines and the bubble shield -- hinted at in the Halo 3 "Starry Night" TV commercial -- were shown for the first time in the video.
